Peer Support Leader
New Town High has an outstanding and long-running tradition of providing peer support and guidance to our incoming Grade Seven students. Each year, a new cohort of Grade Ten Peer Support Leaders are responsible for continuing this strong and proud tradition.
This program is vital in providing a settled, welcoming start to each new Grade Seven boy’s education here at New Town. The role of Peer Support Leaders is to ensure that every student placed in their care enjoys a positive and rewarding experience within this program.
Peer Support Leaders are tasked with providing the students in their group with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed at high school. Achieving this outcome requires sustained enthusiasm, effort and perseverance from leaders.
In order to be fully prepared and organised for the role of Peer Support Leader, Grade Nine students take part in a two-day Leadership Skills Training course in early September. Students are then invited to apply for the position Peer Support Leader. Successful applicants are taken through additional training sessions by the Peer Support Program Coordinator/s to further skill them up in order to perform their duties confidently.
Being a Peer Support Leader involves: welcoming students to the school on Orientation Day and the first day of the school year, leading in-school Peer Support Sessions in small groups, assisting with the running of activities at Peer Support Camp, providing learning and behaviour support within Grade Seven subject classes and, in some cases, additional mentoring of Grade Seven students as required.
